The Benefits of Yawning

Sometimes we are afraid to let out a big wholesome yawn because it might come across as rude or inconsiderate depending on our whereabouts. However there is no reason you shouldn’t be letting go! A recent study by Neuroscientist Andrew Newberg, of the Center for Spirituality and the Mind at the University of Pennsylvania found that yawning is entirely beneficial for your health. Yawning encourages a healthy brain. The action in a yawn stimulates movement in areas of the brain and helps to regulate brain temperature and metabolism. In turn these things increase muscle control, and for those travelers, can even prevent jet lag. Some people say that yawning releases endorphins (feel-good hormones) and gives us a short feeling of happiness. If you’re up for a challenge, try yawning 10 times in a row each day in addition to your regular healthy living routine.

3 Benefits of Yawning

Relaxation

A yawn has the ability to relax your muscles and mind effectively. Newberg says perhaps more effectively than meditation.

Focus

Yawning will help ward off sleepiness. Your attention will be focused on important ideas and issues. The reason we begin yawning before we go to bed is to help regulate our bodies schedule. A yawn is our bodies reminder that tells us we need to sleep.

Empathy

Further research shows that a yawn will stimulate the section of the brain in charge of generating empathy, compassion, and social awareness towards others. Yawning intentionally may increase our ability to treat others with kindness.
