Description
Generic Name: clarithromycin
Drug Class: macrolide antimicrobial
Biaxin Indications
Biaxin is an oral prescription drug that treats mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible strains of designated microorganisms. This is prescribed to patients with community-acquired pneumonia, disseminated mycobacterial infections, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections.
Biaxin Dosage Forms
This is available in Biaxin 500 mg and 250 mg tablets.
Biaxin Mechanism of Action
It inhibits the protein synthesis in bacteria through binding to subunit 50S of the bacterial ribosome. This specific action hinders the peptidyl transferase activity and hampers amino acid translocation during the protein synthesis and translation. As a result, the growth of bacteria can be stopped.
