Proctofoam Mechanism of Action
This topical medication works by inhibiting the transmission of impulses along sensory nerve fibers, which can lead to the relief of irritation, pain, and itching. It blocks the initiation and conduction of certain nerve impulses from sensory nerves by minimizing the permeability of the neuronal membrane to sodium ions. This action stabilizes the membrane and hampers depolarization. It then results in the failure of propagated action potential and subsequent conduction blockade.
