Description

Generic Name: pantoprazole sodium

Drug Class: proton pump inhibitor (PPI)

Indications

Protonix is an oral prescription drug indicated as a short-term treatment of erosive esophagitis linked to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also being prescribed as a maintenance treatment for the healing of erosive esophagitis. Additionally, it is also indicated for pathological hypersecretory conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Protonix Dosage

This is available in the form of Protonix 40 mg and 20 mg delayed-release tablets.

Protonix Mechanism of Action

It suppresses the last step in the production of gastric acid by binding it to the hydrogen potassium ATPase enzyme system along the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell. This results in an antisecretory effect that can last for 24 hours or longer.

How to Take Protonix

It is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide provided by a healthcare provider before beginning to use this medication. You must not take any medication unless you have read and comprehended the instructions and uses. For more medical advice or information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Protonix is only meant to be taken by mouth. This is usually prescribed once a day and preferably at the same time each day. It can be consumed with or without food. After swallowing the tablet completely, drink plenty of water. Cutting or crushing this product is not recommended because doing so can destroy the product.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your Protonix dosage. You should also not take this oral drug more frequently than advised.

Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking this oral medication and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of lupus and liver disease. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
