Description

Generic Name: fesoterodine fumarate

Drug class: anticholinergic

Indications

Toviaz is an oral prescription drug used to treat overactive bladder. It relieves symptoms, such as urinary frequency, urinary urgency, and urinary incontinence. It is also indicated to manage bladder symptoms of neurogenic detrusor overactivity.

Toviaz Dosage

This is available in Toviaz 4 mg and Toviaz 8 mg extended-release tablets.

Toviaz Mechanism of Action

This is a muscarinic receptor agonist which is hydrolyzed by nonspecific esterases to 5-hydroxymethyl tolterodine. This active metabolite is responsible for the antimuscarinic activity of this medication.

How to Take Toviaz

Before you start taking Toviaz, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not take any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details.

Toviaz is only meant to be taken by mouth. This is usually prescribed once a day and preferably at the same time each day. It can be consumed with or without food. Swallow the extended-release tablet entirely and drink fluids right after. Cutting, crushing, or chewing this product is not recommended because doing so can release the ingredients all at once, thus, increasing the adverse effects.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your Toviaz dose. You should not also take this oral drug more frequently than advised.

Toviaz Side Effects

Note that this is not a full/complete list of the side effects of Toviaz.

If you experience severe or persistent adverse reactions, discontinue medication and report side effects to your doctor or healthcare professional.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not take Toviaz if you have a known allergy to fesoterodine or any inactive ingredients the extended-release tablet may contain. Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking this oral medication and seek emergency medical help immediately.

Toviaz may be contraindicated for people with a history of bladder outflow obstruction, urinary retention, gastrointestinal blockage, or any gastrointestinal disease, kidney problems, liver disease, glaucoma, and myasthenia gravis. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Dizziness is a common adverse reaction of this medication. Practice safety caution when doing tasks that would need alertness, especially driving. You must also limit drinking alcohol while taking this tablet.

Fesoterodine can decrease sweating which could increase the risk of heatstroke. If the weather is humid/hot, you should avoid overheating by staying in a cool place, wearing light clothes, and staying hydrated.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms must take this oral drug only if extremely necessary. It is necessary to discuss all the possible risks with a healthcare provider.
