Valcyte is an oral prescription drug used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis among patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is also prescribed to prevent CMV disease in kidney, kidney-pancreas, or heart transplant patients at high risk.

Valcyte Mechanism of Action
This deoxynucleoside analog CMV DNA polymerase inhibitor is a synthetic analog of 2’-deoxyguanosine, which is known to inhibit CMV replication in cell culture and in vivo. It halts the viral DNA synthesis of ganciclovir triphosphate.
How to Take Valcyte

This Valcyte tablet is only meant to be taken by mouth. This is usually prescribed once or twice a day. Take this oral medication with a meal. Swallow the tablet entirely and drink fluids right after. Cutting, crushing, or chewing this product is not recommended.
Make a dosing schedule. It is important to take this medication at evenly spaced intervals because it works best if the level is kept at a constant amount.
